We are looking at adding this feature to allow people to use the barcodes from items the previously inventoried in another system.

In our case, we would love to be able to create/assign a barcode to the inventory items, and then use that for check-in and check-out.
For example, when costuming an actor, they were "assigned" or check out a skirt, top, 2nd dress, jewelry and a purse, so I would scan those barcodes and "check them out" to that actor. Then, at strike, when they are returning, I can just scan barcodes of stuff coming in and "return" it.

This is our situation. Searching by item ID would basically accomplish this. Then for the "shopping cart" idea for check out, add the option to add item to the cart using item ID.
Basically the bar code is the item ID. When you scan the code, it types the ID into the active field on the page.
