What happens when you edit a report template that's in use

The change applies to every report already filed on that template, not just new ones. Fields you turn off disappear from old reports, and renamed fields show their new names.

So once filing has started, leave the template alone. If you need a different layout, use Copy Template into New in the template's gear menu under Reports Administration, change the copy, and archive the old one.
